Do I Need an SUV?
No. The road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is fully paved and in good condition. A regular sedan handles it fine. However, there are two exceptions:
- Driving up to Gergeti Trinity Church: The 6 km gravel road from Stepantsminda to the church is steep, rocky, and ONLY accessible by 4x4. If you want to drive up yourself (instead of hiking 1.5 hours), you need an SUV or 4x4.
- Winter driving (November–April): The Jvari Pass can have snow and ice. An SUV with winter tires is strongly recommended. The pass occasionally closes entirely during severe weather.
Our Recommendation
For a summer trip, rent an SUV — it handles the main road easily AND lets you drive up to Gergeti Trinity Church. Browse SUVs on EliteAuto.rent.
Best Stops Along the Way
1. Ananuri Fortress (67 km from Tbilisi)
About 1 hour from Tbilisi, Ananuri is a stunning 16th-century fortress complex overlooking the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir. The towers and churches are beautifully preserved, and the views of the reservoir below are incredible. Allow 30–45 minutes.
2. Zhinvali Reservoir
Right below Ananuri, this vivid blue-green lake is one of Georgia's most photographed spots. In summer, you can sometimes find locals swimming here. Perfect for photos — stop at the lookout point just south of Ananuri.
3. Pasanauri — Khinkali Capital
The village of Pasanauri (84 km from Tbilisi) is famous for its khinkali — Georgian soup dumplings. Several roadside restaurants serve the best khinkali in the country. A must-stop for lunch. Try the meat-filled traditional version. Expect to pay 1–1.50 GEL per dumpling ($0.35).
4. Jvari Pass (Cross Pass) — 2,395m
The highest point on the road. On a clear day, the views are otherworldly — snow-capped peaks in every direction. There's a small monument and a ski lift area. The weather can change rapidly here — it can be sunny in Tbilisi and snowing at the pass. Bring a jacket even in summer.
5. Gudauri
Georgia's premier ski resort. In summer, it's a quiet mountain town at 2,196m with paragliding, hiking, and incredible views. In winter, it's a buzzing ski destination with affordable lift passes. The Friendship Monument (Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument) is a colorful Soviet-era mosaic viewpoint just outside Gudauri — stunning panoramic views.
6. Stepantsminda (Kazbegi Town)
The final destination. A small mountain town (population ~1,300) with guesthouses, cafes, and the trailhead to Gergeti Trinity Church. On clear days, you can see Mount Kazbek (5,033m) towering over the town — one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus.
7. Gergeti Trinity Church
The crown jewel. This 14th-century church sits at 2,170m on a hilltop with Mount Kazbek as its backdrop. It's one of the most iconic images of Georgia. You have two options:
- Hike: 1.5–2 hours uphill from Stepantsminda. Moderate difficulty.
- Drive: 20 minutes via a rough gravel road. 4x4 only. Some rental partners prohibit this road — check your rental terms.
Practical Tips
- Fill up in Tbilisi. There are gas stations along the way, but fewer options after Pasanauri.
- Start early. Leave Tbilisi by 8–9 AM to avoid traffic and have time for all stops.
- Check the weather. The Jvari Pass can close during heavy snow. Check road status in winter.
- Bring cash. Small restaurants and vendors in Stepantsminda may not accept cards.
- Download offline maps. Cell service can be spotty between Gudauri and Kazbegi.
- Don't rush the return. The road is spectacular in both directions. Evening light on the way back is magical.
