The main road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is fully paved and any car can handle it. However, the 6km gravel road from Stepantsminda up to Gergeti Trinity Church requires a 4x4. An SUV is recommended for the best overall experience.

Tusheti has one of the most dangerous roads in the world. A proper 4x4 is mandatory. Some rental partners prohibit Tusheti due to extreme conditions — check your rental terms. The road is only open June to September.
Basic TPL insurance is included with all rentals. For mountain driving, we strongly recommend upgrading to CDW or Full Coverage. Mountain roads have higher risk of stone chips and undercarriage damage. The extra $8–$15/day is worth the peace of mind.
