Svaneti is Georgia at its most dramatic — a remote, high-Caucasus region of glacier-capped peaks, stone defensive towers (koshki) and villages that have guarded their culture for a thousand years. It's a UNESCO World Heritage landscape and the most spectacular drive in the country after the Military Highway.
This guide covers getting there by car, road conditions, and what you'll need for the journey.
You'll want an SUV or 4x4
The main road to Mestia is now paved, but it's long, winding and remote. The onward track to Ushguli is rough gravel best driven in a 4x4. For Svaneti, an SUV is strongly recommended.
Getting There
- Gateway: Zugdidi (western Georgia), reached from Tbilisi (~320 km) or Kutaisi (~110 km)
- Zugdidi → Mestia: ~130 km, 3–3.5 hours on a paved but winding mountain road
- Mestia → Ushguli: ~45 km, 2–2.5 hours on rough gravel (4x4)
- Best time: June–September; the road can be snow-blocked in winter and spring
Many travellers drive Tbilisi → Kutaisi → Zugdidi → Mestia over a couple of days, combining it with the western route.
What to See
Mestia
The main town and base for the region. Stone watchtowers rise above the houses, and the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography holds remarkable medieval icons and manuscripts. There's a small airport and a ski area (Hatsvali, Tetnuldi) for winter visitors.
Ushguli
One of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe (~2,100 m), beneath Georgia's highest peak, Mount Shkhara (5,193 m). Its cluster of towers framed by glaciers is the iconic image of Svaneti. The drive up is the adventure — slow, bumpy and unforgettable.
Hiking
The Mestia–Ushguli trek is famous, but with a car you can reach trailheads for shorter walks to the Chalaadi Glacier and Koruldi Lakes.
Driving Tips for Svaneti
- Fuel up in Zugdidi — stations are scarce in the mountains.
- Go slow. Expect livestock on the road, blind corners and occasional rockfall.
- Check the weather and the latest road status before heading to Ushguli.
- Download offline maps — mobile coverage is patchy.
- Allow buffer days. Weather can delay travel; don't schedule a tight onward flight.
Which Car to Rent
For Svaneti, choose a capable SUV or 4x4 — especially if you intend to reach Ushguli. If you're only going as far as Mestia in summer, a higher-clearance crossover is the minimum. Compare options on our vehicles page.
